The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
