Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

A defence official has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

The broader security environment highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
